What Citadel Culebra is

The serpent is the most villainized animal alive — and the oldest symbol of healing we have.

It coils around the staff of medicine on every ambulance and prescription, and runs through scripture and myth as wisdom and renewal — the snake raised up to heal, the skin shed to begin again. The Mesoamericans made a god of it: Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent of knowledge. Feared in one breath, revered in the next. Culebra means serpent — and we set it inside a citadel: the keeper of the knowledge, protected and passed on.

A shared standard, drawn from the best of many keepers and many ways of doing things.

We bring the field's most accomplished people together — keepers, breeders, academics, zoos, and conservationists — and take the best of what each has proven. Their combined experience becomes one clear standard the whole community can learn from and build on.
